Mammogram Screenings 101

Published on: December 31, 2013

There are different determining factors for exactly when a woman should have a mammogram done. The Mayo Clinic and American Cancer Society recommend that women between the ages of 40-74 have a mammogram performed annually. However the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women age 50 have a mammogram every two years. While the exact recommendation may not be clear, you and your doctor can discuss whether you need to have a mammogram earlier or later.

Mammography is the process of using low doses of radiation to examine the breast tissue. Mammograms are used as a diagnostic and screening tool to detect early signs of breast cancer. Mammography X-rays can reveal abnormal masses that may not be detected in a self examination. 3D Mammograms offer the latest advancement in the early detection of breast cancer. This latest technology leads to a reduced number of callbacks and less worry for women as the results are much clearer and easier for doctors to read and interpret.

Women who have a family history of breast cancer are encouraged to take extra precautions with their own screening for breast cancer. Self examinations of the breast in the shower are encouraged by everyone, but those at higher risk for breast cancer are highly encouraged to have early and regular mammograms. Doctors can view changes in the breast tissue from annual mammogram results and help women with a higher risk detect any abnormal changes to their breast tissue early.
