Midwife Match-up: Choosing the Right One

Published on: December 5, 2018

Choosing to use a midwife to guide you during pregnancy and through delivery can offer many benefits. Most women decide to use a midwife when they prefer a more personalized, natural approach to delivering their child. However, not all midwives offer the same services or have the same level of training. Finding the right match for your preferences can make a significant difference in your pregnancy and delivery experience.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Midwife

Like any medical professional you choose, you want to find a midwife that is compatible with you and your partner. A vetting process should be considered; a friend or family member may have a midwife they recommend, but that does not mean they are right for you. Here are some questions to ask prospective midwives to help determine if they are a good fit for your needs.

  • What education and training have you received? Not all midwives have the same level of training or education. Look for someone who is a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) and has extensive education and training in the medical field.
  • Where do you deliver? This is important to your preference of delivery, whether it is at home, a hospital or birth center.
  • Do you accept medical insurance? Cost is a factor for most expecting mothers, and paying out-of-pocket is not always an option.
  • What happens if there is a delivery complication? Even healthy women can have difficult deliveries. It is important to know what emergency medical plan they have in place if an OB is needed.

There are also different philosophies on delivery and prenatal care that you can discuss with potential midwives. However, in the end, you want a well-qualified professional that you feel comfortable with when you choose the midwife for your pregnancy and delivery.
