The History of Mammograms

Published on: May 25, 2017

Did you know mammograms have been used for over 100 years to detect breast cancer? Although there have been many advancements, this tool has been the most effective option for detecting breast cancer, allowing for earlier treatment. Here is a brief history of mammograms and the advances made in the fight against breast cancer.

  • 1913. Albert Salomen is the first surgeon to begin utilizing radiology in the detection of breast tumors in Germany.
  • Stafford L. Warren recommends mammograms as a tool to examine breast tissue for cancer. His work in the U.S. begins pushing for side-by-side imaging of both breasts to detect abnormalities.
  • In Uruguay, radiologist Raul Leborgne introduces the compression method for more effective imaging of the breast. The results of his work are published in 1951.
  • 1950’s. Advancements in mammograms continue, with improved imaging developed by Robert Egan in Texas. He shows the effectiveness by using mammography to detect 238 cases of breast cancer that were not found through physical exams in 1000 women.
  • 1960’s. Mammograms are accepted as a detection tool for breast cancer, with the first large study done proving the effectiveness in preventing breast cancer deaths.
  • 1970’s. In 1969, x-ray machines dedicated for mammograms become available. In the 1970’s, advancements in film technology improve imaging.
  • 1990’s. Standardized quality expectations and scoring is established to equalize results throughout the medical community.
  • 2000’s. Beginning in 2000, digital imaging becomes available. Breast cancer deaths are down 30% by 2009 compared to their peak in 1991.
  • The FDA approves 3D mammography technology for improved imaging over traditional digital imaging.

After over a 100 years, mammograms have been improved to help in the early detection of breast cancer. For the latest options available, see a radiology clinic that offers 3D mammography as one of their services.
