Which Contraceptive is Right for You?

Published on: July 25, 2018

If you are not ready to start a family, but you are sexually active, contraceptive of some form is needed. Crossing your fingers and hoping for the best is not a solid plan to stop pregnancy. There are many options available for women to prevent pregnancy, from tried and true methods like the pill and condoms to newer options like the depo shot and implants. Here are a few of the most popular options to help you decide which contraceptive is right for you.

Oral (The Pill)

One of the most popular and effective short-term contraceptives is “the pill” or oral contraceptives. There are several brands and different types, but they all offer a high effectiveness rate when the pills are taken every day. The drawbacks are that if you miss a day, you can be at higher risk for pregnancy.

Depo Shot

Depo-Provera is a progesterone shot that is given every three months to prevent pregnancy. This is a good option for those who don’t want to take a pill every day but want the option to decide to try to become pregnant within a few months.

Implants

For long-term contraceptive, Nexplanon is an implant that is put under the skin in the arm. The time-released implants last for three years. This is an option for those who are not planning a family in the next few years.

It is important to understand that most contraceptives do not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases – only condoms and barrier methods offer protection from contracting STDs. Talk to your OB/GYN about the various contraceptive options available to find the right option for you.
