Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
One of the most painful conditions imaginable is the pain associated with Plantar Fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is on the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. Plantar Fasciitis is characterized by a sharp pain on the bottom of the foot that is also often described as a burning or stabbing pain.
In general, the pain is the most severe in the morning and gradually decreases as the foot warms up, but often returns throughout the day. The condition is also the most common causes of foot and heel pain and affects runners, as well as people that are overweight and pregnant women.
Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy, Neuromuscular Massage and Physiotherapy are the most effective means to treat Plantar Fasciitis. During the treatment, a Chiropractor will work on the entire leg including the hip, knee, the Talo-Fibular joint and the Talo-Tibular or ankle joint using Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy. A licensed massage therapist will stretch and release the muscles, tendons and fascia of the foot and ankle. A Physiotherapist will then work on stretching and strengthening the arches of the foot and supporting muscles.
In addition, they will perform an analysis of the patient’s walking and running gait and work with the patient on the necessary corrections. A check will be made to verify that the patient is bearing weight equally on both feet as well. In some cases the Physiotherapy will include cryotherapy, fomentation, ultrasound and electrical stimulation to control pain and reduce the inflammation of the plantar fascia. The goal of the integrated treatment is to eliminate the pain, as well as the root cause of the Plantar Fasciitis.
