3D Mammograms

Published on: November 21, 2013

One of the major factors in a patient’s long-term survival from breast cancer is early detection of the disease before it spreads into other areas of the patient’s body.  Early detection of the disease allows the patient to be treated early using a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatments, which in many cases can cure the patient of the cancer.  One of the most exciting advances in breast cancer detection technology is the 3D mammogram, which allows the radiologist to pinpoint the size, shape and location of any abnormalities discovered.

During the test, a technician will take a series of images from multiple angels and perspectives.  The images are then reconstructed into a 3D model of the breast using very advanced computer software.  The model provides crucial information to the entire treatment team, including the radiologist, surgeon and oncologist, in determining the best overall treatment for the patient’s cancer.  The 3D mammogram is not a stand-alone test, but is used as a complementary test to the standard mammogram and is another tool in the toolbox of early breast cancer detection.

The test is painless and is done as an outpatient procedure and is covered by most major insurance plans such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Health Care and Cigna.  In most cases, the time to do the combined test does not add any appreciable time to the patient’s overall time at the imaging center.  One of the best things about the 3D mammogram technology is the comfort patients should have is that this innovative technology is now available!
