Effective Treatment for Spider Veins
May 29, 2015
Do your legs have a spider web of veins that are visible? Spider veins are smaller versions of varicose veins that can be embarrassing for some people. Although these veins are more common in older adults, they can appear below the skin in younger people as well. Weight gain, pregnancy, hormones, standing or even sitting for long periods can cause these small veins to weaken and become engorged to make them more noticeable. But there is treatment to remove the appearance of these veins with the use of sclerotherapy.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Varicose or the smaller spider veins are usually caused from a backup of blood in the veins from valve malfunction in the veins. This is what makes them more noticeable, usually forming on the lower legs where the most pressure is posed on the veins to pump the blood back up to the heart. Sclerotherapy works by shrinking these veins, stopping the blood backup and eventually eliminating the veins altogether.
The procedure involves using small needles to inject medication that begins the shrinking process. Depending on the amount of spider veins you have, it can take up to several treatments to completely remove all your spider veins. The treatment is very effective in removing the appearance of spider veins and can also be used on the larger varicose veins. However, the results are not immediate; it can take healing over several weeks or months for the veins to completely disappear.
Spider vein treatment using sclerotherapy is available through many dermatology clinics which offer cosmetic dermatology. With just a few treatments, you can remove those unsightly veins and get your self-confidence back.
