Twin Pregnancy

Published on: September 15, 2014

Many women try for years to become pregnant but find that they need fertility treatments. Those women are often not surprised to find out that they are expecting twins. But there are the rare women who are floored when the ultrasound shows two (or more!) babies developing inside their wombs. Mothers who are pregnant with twins will receive specialized care throughout their pregnancies. They will be closely monitored from their weight gain, nutrition, and any possible complications that could occur.

As with any pregnancy, taking good care of yourself helps to ensure that you are properly taking care of your babies. Women who are pregnant with multiples will have more-frequent doctor appointments to track the growth and development of the babies. Doctors also keep a very close eye on preterm labor signs, as preterm labor is common in twin pregnancy. Women carrying multiples must also watch their nutrition. They need more folic acid, iron, protein, and other nutrients than a women carrying just one baby. Weight gain will also be closely monitored. While it is expected that a woman carrying multiples will gain more weight than a woman carrying one child, excess weight can cause major complications for women who are pregnant with twins.

A trusted obstetrician will help you walk through every stage of your twin pregnancy. With specialized care, routine appointments, and care to details, you can achieve a healthy twin pregnancy. Taking care of you is the best way for you and your doctor to take care of your babies.
