Can Fat Make You Look Younger?

Published on: August 9, 2016

As much time as many people spend trying to lose fat on their body to appear youthful, it may be surprising that fat can make you look younger. While you may not want extra fat on your stomach or thighs, when it is added to your face, it can soften wrinkles and lines, making your face appear more youthful. Fat transfer or grafting is a popular cosmetic procedure that can use fat from your body to improve your face, making excellent use of that extra fat.

Fat transfer is performed in two procedures. First, the fat must be removed from one area of your body. Using liposuction, fat cells are gathered from a fatty area and put through a cleaning method. Once the fat cells are purified, they can be injected into the desired areas. Some common fat transfer locations include:

  • Lips. For those wanting fuller lips, fat injections can give the same results as fillers using your own cells.
  • Cheeks. As you age, your cheeks can lose their youthful softness, causing the area under the eye to sag, making you look tired and older. Adding fat to the upper cheeks can soften eye bags and wrinkles.
  • Smile lines. The deep lines on either side of the nose, often called smile lines, can be diminished using a fat transfer.

If you have been considering cosmetic surgery for your face, fat transfer may be a solution. The procedure is less invasive than many other options and can give you a softer, more youthful face. Consult a local plastic surgeon to see if fat transfer could be right for you.
