Treatment Options for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Published on: June 7, 2018

Most people are familiar with premenstrual syndrome or PMS, which has a variety of symptoms that can impact woman before and during their menstrual period. However, for some women, the symptoms can be more severe. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD and PMS are similar, but PMDD has more symptoms and issues during the week before the period. For women with PMDD, their symptoms can impact their life and even become debilitating, requiring treatment.

PMDD is diagnosed by the number and severity of premenstrual symptoms. In most cases, a woman who routinely experiences five or more of the following symptoms in the week before her period may have PMDD:

  • Bloating
  • Cramps
  • Depression/mood swings/panic attacks
  • Food cravings
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue/irritability/sleep disorders
  • Breast tenderness
  • Lack of mental focus

If there is a combination of these symptoms and they are severe, it can impact work, personal relationships and more. Treatment can make this time during the month more bearable and improve the quality of life for those with PMDD.

Treatment for PMDD

An OB/GYN can diagnose and offer treatment options for PMDD. Each woman is different and may need a different combination of treatments. Some options include using hormonal birth control, anti-depressants, nutrition supplements and other lifestyle changes or medications. Depending on the severity, PMDD sufferers may need to try a few different treatments to find the ones that best control their symptoms and give them the most relief.

If you have been plagued with premenstrual symptoms that are impacting your life, make an appointment with an OB/GYN to determine if you have PMDD. They can discuss treatment options that can give you relief and minimize your discomfort.
