Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Gynecology

Published on: November 30, 2017

What is minimally invasive surgery? It is a technique used in the medical field to reduce the incision size for needed surgeries to limit tissue damage and improve recovery for the patient. These surgeries are often used in small or hard to reach places where open surgery can be risky for the patient. Gynecologists use this technique in many common procedures to minimize risk for their patients and improve the recovery time.

Minimally invasive surgeries often use microscopic cameras and tools that can fit into small spaces. For the field of gynecology, this often means entering through the vagina and cervix to complete surgical procedures. While traditional surgeries may have required open surgery through the abdomen, these new techniques can often eliminate the need for any incision. Some common gynecological surgeries that can be performed with minimally invasive techniques include:

  • laparoscopic myomectomies
  • hysteroscopic myomectomies
  • laparoscopies
  • laparoscopic hysterectomies

The benefits are obvious. Any time open surgery is performed, there is much higher risk for the patient. They must be completed sedated using anesthesia, which has risks. There is a chance of damage to tissue and infection from the incision. The larger opening requires weeks, even months, of healing and recovery; plus, no one wants a large scar across their stomach.

With minimally invasive surgery, recovery and downtime from the procedure can be greatly minimized. In many cases, no incisions are needed to access the problem area. Some procedures only require local anesthesia; the patient may be conscious during the surgery and have less risk of reactions to the anesthesia. Scars are tiny or non-existent.

If you are undergoing surgery for a gynecological reason, ask about minimally invasive options. Many quality OB/GYN clinics offer these options for the benefit of their patients.
