Benefits of Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Hysterectomies

Published on: February 19, 2019

When a hysterectomy is necessary, there are options available in how it is performed. Conventional hysterectomies require open surgery, with a large incision in the abdomen to remove the uterus. However, often a minimally-invasive option is available, called a laparoscopic hysterectomy, which can offer many benefits for those that can use this procedure over traditional surgery.

How a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is Performed

Unlike conventional, open-surgery hysterectomies, there is not a large incision needed for the laparoscopic version. A small incision is used in the abdomen to insert a laparoscope, tiny camera and thin instruments into the abdominal cavity to remove the uterus. Using the digital camera, the surgeon can detach the uterus and remove it through the small incision. Another option is a vaginal-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, when the uterus is removed through the vaginal canal, but guided through the instruments used through the abdomen incision and laparoscope.

The benefits of either form of laparoscopic hysterectomy compared to conventional open surgery are many. The procedure takes less time (often outpatient compared to an inpatient hospital stay), has less blood loss, and has fewer risks for the patient. The recovery time is also much shorter, usually about a week compared to several weeks. The patient heals quicker with less pain, making it an improved experience overall. Plus, the scar is almost unnoticeable, compared to the large incision for conventional hysterectomies.

For anyone suffering from issues that may require a hysterectomy, it is important to talk to an OB/GYN that offers laparoscopic options. When possible, this type of procedure can reduce the risks, pain and recovery for the patient, making it a wise option for many women needing this surgery.
