If you notice that your veins seem a brighter blue, it can be discerning. You may notice sudden prominent blue veins in arms or legs that seem abnormal. You may wonder, “Why are my veins so blue today?” and be concerned. Here are some possible causes of blue veins and whether or not you should see your doctor.

Veins are usually visible under the skin and may appear blue or green. The blood pumping through your veins is red, but the way our eyes view light can make them appear a bluish color. When you notice that your veins seem a brighter blue, it may be due to a variety of reasons.

Factors That Can Affect Vein Color

Your age, genetics, gender and activities can all impact how blue your veins appear. Those with fair skin are more likely to see their veins versus darker skin tones. Age is also a factor – the skin becomes thinner with age, which makes the veins more visible. Some other factors that impact vein color include:

  • Gender. Females are more prone to vein disease that can create spider and varicose veins that are more prominent and visible.
  • Activity level. Your veins can look darker when you are performing strenuous exercise since the blood is pumping harder.
  • Alcohol, nicotine and other substances. Certain substances like alcohol and tobacco can dilate the blood vessels. Over time, continued use can make your veins more noticeable.
  • Hormonal changes. Hormones can impact your veins – it’s common for hormonal changes during pregnancy or other stages of life to make veins look more blue or visible.
  • Exposure to heat. Hot weather, showers or spas can stimulate vein dilation and increase the visibility of your veins.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting. Sitting too long or standing too long can both cause the blood to pool in your leg veins, making them more noticeable.
  • Weight gain or loss. Those with excess weight can put stress on their veins, making them bulge. On the other hand, those who lose too much weight have less tissue to hide veins under the skin.

There are many reasons your veins may look different than they did before. If the change comes on suddenly, it may be due to changes in your environment, activities or intake, but it could be a sign of a health condition. Knowing when to see your doctor is important when you notice vein changes.

Sudden Prominent Blue Veins in Arms

If you notice your veins in your arms and hands seem to bulge and look bluer than before, it could be due to a few reasons. Working out harder than usually can cause changes in hormones like cortisol that can create bulging arm or hand veins.

Another possible reason for your sudden prominent blue veins in arms is vein insufficiency. This vein disease can result in spider or varicose veins. While these noticeable veins are more common in the legs, they can occur almost anywhere, including in the arms and hands.

When Should You See a Doctor for Blue Veins?

Most changes in the color of veins do not require an emergency room visit. It is more likely that you had hormonal, temperature or activity changes that made your veins appear more blue than usual. However, when your veins continue to look bluer and more prominent, you may want to see your doctor.

Blue, purple or red veins that look like spiderwebs of color under the skin are usually spider veins. These are a milder type of vein insufficiency. This means the valves in the veins are not working correctly, allowing the blood to pool and create the sprawling webs of color under the skin.

Bulging or prominent blue veins are usually varicose veins. These are signs of more significant vein disease. Both varicose and spider veins can be removed with various treatments but it is important to address the causes of vein disease that can lead to health concerns down the road.

One type of sudden blue vein does require immediate medical attention. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in the vein, usually in the leg. This is dangerous because these blood clots can break loose and cause a pulmonary embolism. See a doctor if you have a bulging vein with:

  • Pain around the vein
  • Swelling around the vein
  • Tenderness and redness
  • Skin feels warm to the touch around the vein

These can be signs of DVT and need urgent medical care to diagnose your condition and receive treatment if needed.

The next time you wonder, “Why are my veins so blue today?” consider changes in your weight, activity, substance intake and environment. If they continue or you have symptoms of DVT, make sure to see your doctor to determine whether you need treatment for a serious vein condition.
